Tiny Habits

Use “starter steps” to keep your new habit alive. Conventional wisdom says that creating positive change is all about willpower. But this is wrong. The best way to change your habits is to start small and avoid biting off more than you can chew. Human behavior is driven both by what we’re motivated to do and what we can do. This means we tend to prefer picking the low-hanging fruit and doing the easy stuff. And that’s the key to designing tiny habits. When you make something simple and easy to do, you’re much more likely to actually do it.

Key insights

  • Creating positive change can be easy, but it requires a new approach.

  • If you want meaningful long-term change, start small.

  • Three key variables drive human behavior — motivation, ability, and prompts.

  • Motivation may suffice for one-off feats, but it’s not enough for sustained change.

  • The easier a habit is, the higher the chances that you’ll adopt it.

  • You can design prompts to trigger your own desired behaviors.

  • When designing your action prompts, consider location, frequency, and theme.
