Federer | Getting Better| Push self

Last week, was a special Halloween edition discussing FEARs. This week, I will talk about emulation and in doing so how to get to your next level.

But before anything let’s welcome new leaders in this community of like-minded personal growth seekers. Welcome, enjoy, share your thoughts and comments, and don’t hesitate to share the content of this letter should you feel that it could help people around you.

Talking about FEAR last week, I suggested reframing those False Expectations/Evidence Appearing Real for Face Everything And Rise. Also, a couple of weeks ago in "today is your lucky day" I shared with you the four traits of being lucky: seeing opportunity, thinking, feeling lucky, and denying fate. So what if facing our fear is our opportunity? What if Facing Everything And Rise is the path to greatness?

A couple of weeks ago, Roger Federer retired. Roger doesn’t need an introduction as he is one of the greatest tennis players of all time with 20 Majors under his belt. Style, elegance, punch, class… so many superlatives to describe him!

And then came Nadal! …22 grand slam titles and counting….

And then came Djokovic, 21 and counting…

So, the Big Three as they’re commonly nicknamed in tennis, the trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, each one considered to be among the greatest players of all time.

The trio have dominated men's singles tennis for nearly two decades. They were ranked as world No. 1s in singles for a total of 892 weeks (equivalent to 17 years): Djokovic for 373 weeks, Federer for 310, and Nadal for 209. One of the three finished the season as the year-end No. 1 player every year Since 2004…Collectively they won 63 major singles tournaments. Thinks about it, there are 4 grand slams in a season, which means that for 16 years uninterrupted one of those three has won! Mad.

This could have been boring as hell, but actually, this has probably given rise to some of the greatest tennis matches ever played!

In the Wimbledon final in 2008, Nadal defeated Federer after 4 hours and 48 minutes of play, winning 9–7 in the last set. The match is regarded by many as the greatest tennis match ever. I recall it still!

Fast forward to 2019 and another Wimbledon final for Federer, won by Djokovic this time. The final lasted 9mns longer than in 2008 for a whopping 4 hours and 57 minutes, making it the longest singles final in the tournament's history. Djokovic took the final set 13-12 after a tie-break, as a packed Centre Court crowd erupted after a thrilling contest.

So, when a couple of weeks ago the picture below went viral, it was a light bulb moment. They respect and love each other so much! Their greatness comes from the other pushing them further, to new standards, to rethink, to refocus, to train harder and longer. But always with respect and admiration for the opponent!

Recently, I listened to a successful entrepreneur, Russell Brunson, who mentioned a chat he had with one of his competitors’ CEOs. As Brunson’s venture was about to surpass his competitor, the CEO asked “Why do you hate us so much?”. Branson was surprised by the question as for him he did not “hate” this company, on the contrary actually! He respected this company so much that he became obsessed with it as the example of what he wanted to become, do, and surpass.

A word that I learned to love (and that I am still surprised by the number of people who don’t know it) is “emulation”. I LOVE that word! It is defined as the “effort to match or surpass a person or achievement, typically by imitation.”, in other words, a healthy competition.
